Glossary

A reference guide to common football terminology, with illustrative examples.

Playoff (n.)
A secondary qualification round for teams that did not automatically qualify through their group stage. Example: "Italy entered the playoff having finished second in their group, only to lose to Sweden."
Golden Generation (n.)
A cohort of talented players expected to dominate a sport. Example: "Italy's golden generation of the 2000s won the 2006 World Cup. The generation immediately following them did not qualify for three consecutive tournaments."
Reigning Champion (n.)
The most recent winner of a tournament. Example: "As reigning European Champions, Italy entered 2022 qualifying with high expectations." (No further example given.)
Neutral (n.)
A viewer with no team competing in a given match or tournament. Example: "Italian fans will be watching the 2026 World Cup as neutrals."
Group of Death (n.)
A group containing multiple highly-ranked teams, where qualification is extremely difficult. Example: "Italy fans often worry about being drawn into a Group of Death. Fortunately, this is only a concern for teams that make it to the tournament."
Offside (n.)
An infraction where an attacking player is closer to the opponent's goal line than the ball and the second-last opponent. Example: "Understanding offside is tricky for beginners. Understanding how to score a legal goal is also tricky, as Italy demonstrated during the 2018 playoffs."
Nil-Nil (adj./n.)
A match ending in a score of 0–0. Example: "A nil-nil draw against Northern Ireland in the final group game is an excellent way to ensure your November is completely free of stressful football matches."
Aggregate (n.)
The combined score across two legs of a tie. Example: "Italy failed to score across 180 minutes of play against Sweden, losing 1–0 on aggregate. This is rare for a four-time World Cup winner."
Extra Time (n.)
An additional period of play when a match is level after 90 minutes, typically in knockout rounds. Most teams view extra time as an opportunity. Some teams do not reach it.
Carosello (n., Italian)
A celebratory procession of cars honking their horns through city streets following a major sporting victory. A vivid cultural tradition. Not currently in widespread seasonal use in Rome or Milan.
The 92nd Minute (n., colloquial)
In general usage, the period of injury time at the end of a match. In certain Mediterranean contexts, it has acquired a more specific and more personal meaning. See: North Macedonia, 2022.
